Overview

Timechain EVM natively incorporates the Ethereum Virtual Machine using PolkaVM and pallet-revive module. This enables developers to deploy and run Solidity smart contracts directly on Timechain, improving interoperability with Ethereum tools while benefiting from Substrate's modular design and security.

Timechain EVM enables Ethereum-compatible smart contract execution through these core components:

1. Timechain Runtime

The foundation of the Timechain, built with Substrate SDK. It includes:

  • NPoS Consensus: Secures the network via Nominated Proof-of-Stake.
  • Governance Modules: Facilitates decentralized decision-making.
  • Forkless Upgrades: Updates without network splits.
  • EVM Module: Integrates EVM functionality directly into the runtime.

2. Pallet-Revive (Execution Layer)

A custom Substrate module that powers EVM operations:

  • Executes contracts as RISC-V  bytecode via PolkaVM .
  • Manages contract deployment, state changes, and transaction processing.
  • Processes Ethereum-style transactions relayed through the RPC Proxy.

3. PolkaVM

A high-performance virtual machine replacing the traditional EVM:

  • Built on RISC-V  architecture for speed and security.
  • Features sandboxing for safe contract execution.
  • Compiles Solidity code into RISC-V bytecode for compatibility.

4. Revive Compiler

Bridges Solidity development with PolkaVM:

  • Converts YUL (generated by Solidity compilers) into PolkaVM-ready bytecode.
  • Supports multiple Solidity versions; integrates seamlessly with tools like Remix.
  • Most compilation steps are automated, minimizing developer effort.

5. Ethereum RPC Proxy

Enables Ethereum-native tooling integration:

  • Translates standard Ethereum RPC calls (e.g., from MetaMask) into Substrate-compatible transactions.
  • Returns responses in Ethereum JSON-RPC format for seamless compatibility.
  • Allows developers to use familiar tools without modifications.

Why Timechain EVM?

Integrating PolkaVM capabilities into the Timechain allows you to:

  • Utilize Familiar Tools: Leverage your existing Solidity and Ethereum development skills and tools, including Remix, Hardhat, Foundry, ethers.js, and MetaMask, with minimal adaptation for Timechain EVM.
  • Build Unified Applications: Seamlessly combine EVM smart contracts and native Timechain features within a single application.
  • Enable Enhanced Interoperability: Create contracts that can interact with core Timechain functionalities, e.g., cross-chain messaging (via Analog GMP).
  • Simplify Development: Reduce complexity by building integrated applications that eliminate the need for separate cross-chain bridges or multi-chain deployments.
  • Access the Analog Ecosystem: Deploy EVM contracts that benefit from the security and connectivity of the Analog network.

How It Works

At a high level, the Timechain EVM allows you to treat the Timechain like any other EVM-compatible blockchain (e.g., Ethereum, Polygon, or BNB Chain) for deploying and interacting with smart contracts.

When you send an EVM transaction (e.g., deploying a contract, calling a function, etc.) to the Timechain EVM endpoint, the Timechain runtime processes it. An integrated component, powered by PolkaVM and facilitated by pallet-revive, takes your EVM transaction, executes the corresponding bytecode within a sandboxed environment, manages the contract's state, and updates the Timechain's storage accordingly.

This process is handled entirely within the Timechain's block production and finalization mechanism, just like native Substrate transactions. The fees for EVM transactions are paid in the Timechain's native token ($ANLOG) and are metered using a gas system analogous to Ethereum, but mapped to Substrate's fee structure.
